The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for administering and enforcing securities legislation in the Province of Ontario. As a regulator of the capital markets, the OSC is working to safeguard the integrity of the Ontario securities markets. With the challenges of regulating today’s ever changing dynamic capital markets, the OSC continues to be an employer that offers exciting career opportunities.

The Derivatives Branch is primarily responsible for developing a regulatory framework for over-the-counter (“OTC”) derivatives markets in Ontario and for ensuring compliance oversight of derivatives market participants with existing derivatives related regulations. The branch provides expert advice in derivatives, sophisticated financial products and financial markets, and represents the OSC on domestic and international committees focused on OTC derivatives. Professional staff work with other regulators in the creation of a transparent framework for regulating OTC derivatives markets and continuing to develop a clearing system to reduce counterparty credit risks. Reporting to the Director, Derivatives, it is now seeking a Senior Legal Counsel to join its team located in downtown Toronto.

The ideal candidates will have a minimum of 6 years of derivatives experience gained at a law firm, bank, or other sell-side or buy-side firm (including asset management firms and pension funds). Excellent legal knowledge of issues within the derivatives area (OTC and exchange-traded derivatives), as well as strong drafting skills and excellent judgment will be essential for this role as you will be responsible for leading large complex projects involving designing rules, regulations and policies. For this reason, any experience in policy development will be of interest. The ability to work independently and to build relationships will be important as you will be participating in government level discussions and sitting on domestic and international committees.

This is an opportunity to work on senior level matters and influence the further development of laws impacting derivatives in Canada and globally. The work is varied, challenging and anything but routine. The team is close-knit and takes a team approach to their work. It offers a diverse, fair and flexible work environment and takes pride in its challenging and rewarding work. If you like to problem solve and have a genuine interest in protecting the integrity of the ever changing capital markets, this may be the perfect position for you. If you are interested in this opportunity, please send your cover letter and resume to Lorene Nagata of Nagataconnex Executive Legal Search.
