Payments Canada makes payments easier, smarter and safer for people living in Canada by providing secure and resilient infrastructure where payments are cleared and settled between financial institutions. We are a public purpose organization that owns and operates Canada’s payment systems, Lynx, the Automated Clearing Settlement System (ACSS) and the forthcoming Real-Time Rail (RTR). We are also responsible for the by-laws, rules and standards that support these systems. In 2024, our systems cleared and settled $107 trillion — more than $424 billion every business day. From a down payment on a home, an invoice paid to a local business or a first pay cheque — payments keep Canadians and the economy moving forward.
As the operator of the payments systems across Canada, there is a need for a Senior Legal Counsel to provide legal advice on the large IT systems upon which these payment systems rely. This individual will take a leadership role in advising on, negotiating and drafting a variety of agreements, including complex technology agreements, commercial contracts, MSAs, SaaS and licensing agreements. Working directly with the senior business teams, you will provide legal advice on strategy, risk and business objectives. This role may be located in Toronto or Ottawa, with a hybrid policy of 2 days / week in the office.
The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of commercial IT and / or corporate / commercial experience gained from a law firm or corporation. Any experience in financial services and with federally-regulated entities will be an asset. Strong negotiation and drafting skills as well as the ability to be decisive and self-motivated are essential. The ability to build relationships with business clients and peers, and to mentor others within the legal team, will be important to succeed.
Our client’s values ensure Payments Canada is an organization where trust, community and change guide their actions.
