Beginning in 2000 with the introduction of the joint Masters Degree in Electronic
Commerce, now the Masters in Digital Innovation, Dalhousie’s Law and Computer
Science Faculties have explored ways to collaborate to advance research, learning
and teaching in areas at the intersections of computer science and law. This joint
appointment continues that collaboration towards a greater understanding of the
legal, ethical and policy challenges arising from the use of Big Data, the
development of algorithmic prediction systems, and the deployment of artificial
intelligence systems. Multi-disciplinary research and teaching are essential to pave
the way to integrated legal and computer systems, to ensure that society can make
the most efficient use of technology in a manner that respects individual rights,
takes account of disparate impacts of these technologies on marginalized groups,
and promotes the public interest.
Big Data is one of Dalhousie University’s two Cross-Cutting Research Themes. It is
also a component of six of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We seek applicants comfortable working at the intersections of computer science
and law to contribute to the research and teaching programs in both faculties.
Their research themes must be in one or more of the areas identified above, or
related areas. They will ideally have, in addition, complementary interests in one or
more of intellectual property, cybersecurity, and related ethical, regulatory and
policy issues. The ideal candidate has a portfolio of published work in both Law and
Computer Science venues. They will be able to play an active role in advancing the
work and activities of the Schulich School of Law’s Law and Technology Institute
and Technology and Innovation Law Clinic (initio), and the Faculty of Computer
Science’s Institute for Big Data Analytics.
Applicants with a Law background would at the time of appointment hold an LL.B.
or J.D. degree, a relevant Master’s degree, and a relevant doctorate (completed or in
progress). Applicants with a Computer Science background would hold at the time
of appointment a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related fields. Regardless of
educational credentials, all applicants must have an outstanding academic record
in Law/Computer Science. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate an
accelerating record of scholarly engagement relevant to the thematic areas
identified above. A record of teaching excellence is a strong asset.
