Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (“HOOPP”) is one of Canada’s largest defined benefit pension plans. It is dedicated to providing retirement security to more than 400,000 healthcare workers in Ontario and as of December 31, 2020 holds over $104 billion in net assets. It is also an organization that has been recognized as a leader in sustainable and responsible investing, winning environmental awards in the recent past as well as recently being named one of the Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for the second year in a row. With offices in downtown Toronto, our client’s environment is fast-paced, friendly and diverse.

HOOPP continues to grow, both in size and complexity of its operations and investments, and is therefore seeking an experienced private markets lawyer to join its legal department. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Investments, the successful candidate will be primarily responsible for providing transactional and strategic legal support to the Investment Management, Investment Finance and Risk divisions, on a wide range of complex global private equity, private debt, infrastructure, real estate and other private investments, and will identify and manage investment legal risk based on HOOPP’s risk tolerance. The successful candidate will be expected to independently manage complex global private investment files and projects, and may mentor or manage other members of the Investments Legal team.

The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years’ experience in M&A, private equity, private debt, infrastructure and/or real estate transactions, gained at a leading law firm, government entity, financial institution, asset manager, or as in-house counsel, with at least 5 of the years in private practice. Experience in international private markets and working with Canadian pension plans are highly desirable. The individual must be highly motivated and self-confident with excellent communication skills, as this person will be engaging directly with internal partners, external counsel and stakeholders. Strong business acumen, good judgment and pragmatism will also be required to succeed in this role.

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced transactional lawyer to continue to develop their legal career and their business and management skills in a supportive, team-focused environment. To ensure its success, the organization is committed to hiring exceptional people who will contribute their energy and talents towards achieving these goals. HOOPP offers its employees membership in its world class defined benefit pension plan and fulsome extended benefits. HOOPP also believes that equity, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to its success and help employees feel valued and empowered to be their authentic selves.
