Established in 1927, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) delivers remarkable experiences as the trusted destination for the world’s wine, beers, and spirits.  As one of the world’s largest purchasers of beverage alcohol, the LCBO is a best-in-class, customer-first, responsible retailer and wholesaler, supporting local communities and delivering value to Ontarians.  Headquartered in downtown Toronto, the LCBO operates more than 680 stores, a full-service e-commerce site, over 280 LCBO Convenience Outlets for rural consumers, and five regional warehouse facilities. In fiscal year 2021, the LCBO delivered a $2.39 billion dividend to the Ontario government and with the help of their generous customers, raised over $13.6 million in charitable funds to support the health and well-being of Ontarians.

As a result of the implementation of an organization-wide transformation strategy, the legal team at the LCBO is now looking to add an Assistant General Counsel – Commercial, a brand new role that will form a part of the legal leadership team.  Reporting directly to the Chief Legal Officer, the Assistant General Counsel – Commercial will negotiate, draft and review a wide range of commercial contracts, including procurement of goods and services and retail and wholesale agreements, and provide business-oriented legal advice to various business units at LCBO.  As part of the Leadership Team, this individual will participate in strategic discussions about the long-term plans for the Legal department.  As a manager, this leader will have a team of lawyers reporting to it, and be based out of the head office on Queen’s Quay East in Toronto, with a hybrid work arrangement of 3 days in the office.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 8 years of post-call corporate and commercial experience gained from a leading law firm and/or corporation.  Any commercial IT experience, and/or experience with public procurement, will be of particular interest.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, pragmatism, and the ability to build relationships with colleagues and internal clients are essential for this role.  Managerial or leadership skills will be required as you will be managing a team.  Strong business acumen, rigour, analytical capabilities, and a strategic mindset will be mandatory to succeed in this role, as you will be working closely with the various business divisions and play an integral role in implementing the group’s strategic plan.

This is an exciting opportunity to take on a leadership role within the legal team at LCBO, and to play an important role in the continued efforts to modernize the department itself.  It offers a collaborative and dynamic environment, challenging work, and a competitive compensation package.  If you are interested in applying to this opportunity, please forward your CV and cover letter to Lorene Nagata or Lesa Ong of NagataConnex Executive Legal Search at the contact information below.
