LEGAL COUNSEL 3-6 years Policy experience (1.5 year contract)

The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) is the statutory body responsible for administering and enforcing securities legislation in the Province of Ontario. The Enforcement Branch investigates and litigates breaches of securities laws in Ontario, assisting in protecting investors from unfair or improper practices and fostering fair and efficient markets. In addition, this branch plays an active role in policy review and development within the OSC. It is now seeking a policy counsel. For this position, you will assist in advising on and drafting of policies, rules, legislation and staff notices, interact with stakeholders including the General Counsel’s Office, government and the CSA, conduct research on complex issues and contribute to the development of policy initiatives. You will also have the opportunity to analyze and develop plans and principles for the legal services being provided. This position will report to a Director and senior management level individuals and, post-COVID, be located in downtown Toronto, however, there will be flexibility to work from home for part of the time.

The ideal candidate will have 3 to 6 years of policy development or securities litigation experience gained at a government, a regulator, a law firm or a corporation. Excellent writing and communication skills and the ability to analyze and process information quickly will be necessary to succeed in this role. The ability to work on a team, be analytical and balance regulatory objectives with practical business considerations will also be important. You should also be able to summarize complex information for reporting to senior management, be detail oriented, take pride in your work and be able to multi-task.
